Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Independence Hall, located in the heart of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is one of the most important historic buildings in the United States. Constructed between 1732 and 1753, it was originally known as the Pennsylvania State House. Today, it is best known as the site where both the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution were debated and adopted.

The building is an elegant example of Georgian architecture, with red brick walls, white trim, and a prominent clock tower. Its Assembly Room, a modest chamber with wooden chairs and green-covered tables, was the setting for some of the most significant moments in American history. On July 4, 1776, members of the Second Continental Congress met there to approve the final text of the Declaration of Independence, proclaiming the colonies' freedom from British rule.

A decade later, in the summer of 1787, delegates from twelve states gathered once again at Independence Hall to draft the U.S. Constitution, creating a framework for a new national government. These events earned the building its name and cemented its place as a symbol of American democracy.

Independence Hall is now part of Independence National Historical Park and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors from around the world come to tour the building and learn about the founding of the United States. Nearby, the Liberty Bell, once housed in the bell tower of Independence Hall, continues to serve as a powerful symbol of freedom.

Preserved and carefully restored, Independence Hall is more than just a historic structure—it is a living monument to the ideals of liberty, self-governance, and the enduring belief that all people are created equal. Its legacy continues to inspire and remind Americans of their shared history and democratic foundations.

Byodo-In Temple in Oahu, Hawaii

Located near the eastern shore of Oahu in the Valley of the Temples Memorial Park, the Byodo-In Temple in Hawaii is a non-denomination shrine and half-sized replica of the Byodo-In Buddhist Temple found in Kyoto, Japan. It was constructed in 1968 to commemorate the centennial of the first Japanese immigrants to come to Hawaii.

During my road trip around Oahu, I stopped at the Byodo-In Temple to tour the lush gardens. Massive koi ponds surround the temple, and a number of onlookers tossed fish food into the ponds stirring the koi into a frenzy. The scenery, architecture, and peacefulness of the surroundings made exploring the Byodo-In Temple a really memorable experience.
