Death Valley National Park in California

Death Valley National Park is one of the most extreme and fascinating landscapes in North America. Spanning parts of eastern California and western Nevada, it is the largest national park in the contiguous United States and is famous for its dramatic desert scenery, towering mountains, and vast salt flats. The park is perhaps best known for Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America at 282 feet (86 meters) below sea level.

Death Valley is also one of the hottest places on Earth. Temperatures in the summer regularly soar above 120°F (49°C), with a record high of 134°F (56.7°C) recorded at Furnace Creek. Despite these harsh conditions, the park supports a surprising variety of life, including desert-adapted plants, reptiles, and mammals that have evolved to survive in extreme heat and arid conditions.

The park’s landscapes are incredibly diverse. Visitors can explore the rolling sand dunes of Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes, the colorful mineral deposits of Artist's Palette, and the rugged peaks of the Panamint Range. Each area offers a unique glimpse into the geological forces that have shaped the region over millions of years.

Today, the park attracts adventurers, photographers, and nature enthusiasts eager to experience its stark beauty.

Overall, Death Valley National Park is a place of extremes—where heat, silence, and vastness combine to create an unforgettable and humbling experience.

Ghost Town of Rhyolite, Nevada

Located near the eastern edge of Death Valley National Park, the ghost town of Rhyolite, Nevada has become a tourist attraction in its own right. Once a mining town of over 3000 people at the beginning of the 20th century, Rhyolite was almost completely abandoned by 1920.

Similar to East Jesus in Slab City, part of Rhyolite has been transformed by outdoor sculptures and art projects. Surrounded by some relatively harsh desert, the ghost town of Rhyolite is a welcome bit of novelty to explore.
